This resource is aimed at supporting chaplains who are working in Church Foundation universities. Much of it will also be of interest to the wider group of university chaplains, and beyond that to those engaged in a variety of forms of authorised ministry. It is written by someone who has found university chaplaincy to be remarkably stimulating, varied and rewarding and who believes in the relevance and irreplaceable value of this work for the contemporary church.
This resource does not promise encyclopaedic comprehensiveness, but rather emerges out of reflection on what are some of the key questions facing chaplaincy today. Neither is it meant to be a source of instruction. Rather it offers a diverse but connected set of conversation pieces aimed at helping to stimulate one’s own thinking. One of the glories of chaplaincy is the sheer array of approaches that emerge through the interaction of a unique person ministering in a specific context. Adapting (and rejecting) what is here for one’s own use is thus a necessary and inescapable task.
Each individual page can be read in isolation; each has been written to be free standing. However, the pages are also linked together in a logical structure so allowing for the possibility of more sustained engagement. Please consult the map of the website here to aid navigation.
It is hoped this resource will provide theological insight to help guide your work and provide defence against detractors. It aims to give encouragement in the good times, and solace in the bad. It is hoped it will afford a place to regroup when perplexity strikes or doubts arise. Mostly, however, it will have served its purpose if even in small and trivial ways it helps you to fulfil your particular vocation before God.
